The Literary Studies Group, meets on the third Tuesday of the month, to exchange ideas and opinions on the book we have read.

The books are supplied by Devon Libraries and each year we receive a list from them from which we jointly select the titles we would like to read during the coming year.

Ellie collects all the books from the library, distributes them at our meeting and gathers the books back in from the previous month, which she then returns to the library.

Our monthly meetings are held in a friendly atmosphere where all views and opinions are valued.

Our August Meeting

Our last book was 'In a House of Lies’, which is Ian Rankin’s twenty-second crime novel featuring Detective Inspector John Rebus.  However, Rebus is now retired, making us question the credibility of his involvement in this case.  The book is billed as a John Rebus Thriller, but it features far too many other characters, old and new, with Rebus forcing himself into their investigation as much as he is able. The many references to past cases and relationships, including the confusing use of first and last names, meant that we were too busy trying to keep track of who was who and their role in the narrative to enjoy this otherwise well-written story.  Having said that, those of us who were fans of Ian Rankin/ Rebus, and therefore more familiar with the characters involved, found the book more enjoyable, but the consensus was still one of disappointment.
